Program Highlights

FAERD (Scandanavia)

Færd‘s material is a mix of traditional and new tunes and songs by a wide range of musicians and composers from all over the world. Jens Ulvsdand, Swedish guitar and bouzouki player and singer, had a background in jazz and rock music before he started playing folk music about 15 years ago. Peter Urhbrand, prize winning Danish fiddler and viola player and Eskil Romme, saxophonist, accordion player and singer from Denmark, have been in the same musical fields. Færd now mixes Scandavian folk music with jazz and rock music, but on an acoustic base. They last toured Australia in 2004.

Erin (Australia)

With its infectious rhythms, stirring tales, and haunting melodies, Erin is a traditional Irish band but with a twist, and is an experience you’ll never forget! Thrill to the fiddle, swoon to the song, and enjoy the “craic” with Erin.

Mike Compton (USA)

Mike Compton is the double Grammy Award winning mandolin player of "O Brother Where Art Thou" fame. He will be accompanied by Bluegrass Parkway, one of the best bluegrass bands in the country, from WA.

NEW EVENT …… The Spoken Word.

This year’s festival will include a yarn-spinning and story-telling session as well as a workshop, as part of the Spoken Word  program. These will be presented by Marie Finlay from West Australia who will use the theme ‘Personal and community empowerment through story-telling.’ Marie is a highly experienced professional in this field, so attendees are assured of very entertaining sessions.

Come along and entertain the listeners with your stories and yarns, be they humorous, serious, dramatic or just plain silly!!! And join Marie’s workshops about the art of yarn-spinning. There is a prize for the best yarn … a shovel mounted on a decorative wooden block. This will be an annual prize, suitably engraved, to be held by the winner for a year.

Cecile Corbel (Brittany)

"Imagine a red haired Celt from Brittany, with a voice that hovers somewhere between Kate Bush... the purity of Sinead O’Connor and the mysticism of Enya and you’ll have a good idea what this remarkable young harpist, arranger of traditional songs and original songwriter sounds like.” SMH

Poet's breakfast

As usual, Poet’s Breakfasts will be held on both Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 until 10 am.
These will be held in The Shed beside YCEN. Catering will be provided by the Yackandandah Soccer club.

A poetry workshop later on the Saturday morning will be presented by Carol Heuchan from the Hunter Valley in NSW. Carol, who was the Bush Poet of the Year in 2007, will also be MC for the Poet’s Breakfasts. So bring your poems along to the Poet’s Breakfasts to read or recite, to the aroma of coffee brewing and bacon and eggs out on the lawn! An innovation this festival will be a poetry competition within the four local primary schools, namely Indigo Valley, Osborne’s Flat, Wooragee and Yackandandah. There will be two age categories with the three winners of each being invited to present their poems during the Sunday Poet’s Breakfast. All these poems will be pinned up in The Shed for all to see.

Young Local Talent Showcase 2008

NEW VENUE! NEW EVENT!

The Shed - *Free Entry*

Located smack bang in the middle of the action, The Shed is the Yackandandah Folk Festival’s newest and coolest venue. It’s been transformed from an old farming produce shed to an extended lounge-room, complete with carpet, sofas and funky décor.

The Shed will host the Young Local Talent Showcase, the festival’s first-ever celebration of the substantial musical talent of its local citizens. The Showcase gives experienced performers a chance to display their wares, and first-timers a friendly and supportive place to earn their stripes. And it’s not just folk, either!

The Showcase is proud to present the energetic multi-talented guitarist Richard Perso; the all-girl alt-rock band Squeal & Piggyback; the earthy rhythms of Strings & Skins; Stephanie Zahra’s soaring vocals; 12-year-olds Anna, Lucy and Eliza’s guitar and vocal chorus; the fun time party tunes of The Hoofs and many more. Grab something to eat, snuggle up on a couch and enjoy!

Young Local Talent Showcase
Sat:    2.00pm – 5.40pm
Sun:   12.40pm – 4.00pm
