Opening parade
Yackandandah Folk Festival
seeks local groups to join Opening Parade.
Each year the Yackandandah Folk Festival opens with a celebratory community parade in High St. at 6.30pm on Friday night - March 20th - prior to the Opening concerts.
This year the parade will begin and end at the Yackandandah Primary School, processing down High St. and back again. As an expression of the vitality of the Yackandandah community, the 2009 parade will consist of more than just the school children parading their creative work, although they are sure to be a feature!
Yackandandah Community organisations, groups and individuals of all descriptions are encouraged to join the school kids and the visiting festival performers in the parade with banners, festival music and art and an enthusiastic sense of community celebration.
A pre festival community parade workshop will be held in Yackandandah on Saturday 14th March at the Senior Citizens Centre from 10.00am – 3.00pm.
Drop in for half an hour or all day. Artists and event workers will support groups with practical ideas and materials to get motivated and creative so you can join in with this year’s theme of ‘movement’.
There are many ways you can participate. You can come along and learn the parade tune so you can join in with your instrument of choice. The parade music will be led by Melbourne based brass and percussion outfit Havana Palava, You can learn the simple percussion part or the easy movement sequence. You can make “movement” art objects that will energise the parade or just spruce up your banner. Bring your ideas, suggestions and questions.
If you just want to walk with us in the parade, you are welcome, but be warned, you may get moved with the uplifting spirit of the celebration. As well as the heightened sense of community spirit, participation in the parade is also an opportunity to promote your activities by handing out information and demonstrating your organisation in creative ways.
If you are interested in being involved in the Opening Parade come along to the pre-festival workshop or contact Yackandandah Folk Festival Co ordinator karenroben@bigpond.com Ph. 0458454050 to register your interest to participate.
